Jump-start your career: Become indispensable

Problem: You are worried that you might fall victim to the latest round of layoffs or that you will be overlooked for a promotion.

Scenario: Lately, you have no motivation, and you’ve lost enthusiasm for your job. You are in a rut, and you realize that you aren’t giving your work 100%. Because of that, you fear for your job security.

Solution: Motivate yourself to get back on top by breaking out of your comfort zone, absorbing as much knowledge as you can and resolving problems. If you do that, you become a critical part of your team—and indispensable within your organization. Here’s how:

  • Listen, listen, listen. Find out what people are talking about. What issues continuously pop up? What challenges do people face? What is working within your organization?
  • Ask questions. Take the initiative and ask someone who’s “in the know” about the objectives of higher management. “Darrell, what challenges do you think we need to overcome this year? What do you think we need to do to increase our profit ratio? What are our competitors doing that we aren’t? By showing interest in big picture issues, you not only increase your own awareness but also you show others that you care about the future of the organization.
  • Roll up your sleeves and work. Now that you know what your organization’s obstacles are, you can help overcome them. Set aside 15 minutes every morning to brainstorm ideas and come up with solutions to problems. Research the issues. Read trade publications and discuss your findings with a co-worker or friend. Then the next time you have the opportunity, you can present your ideas to your boss and other members of the management team. You will be viewed as someone who seeks out solutions—rather than just pointing out flaws—and that will make you an asset.
